Sunday School Union convenes at Springfield Baptist

The Wilkes County Sunday School Union convened with Springfield Baptist Church where Rev. Norman Williams served as host pastor and Charles Morgan as host superintendent. The session was opened by President Enoch Booker Jr. Devotional services were led by Larry Smith and Larry Campbell. Singing was by the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church choir. The sermon was preached by Rev. David Fanning entitled “Giving and Receiving Blessings” taken from St. Luke 6:38. The benediction was led by Rev. Norman Williams.

The Saturday session was opened by Booker and devotional services were led by Larry Williams, Larry Dunn, and Larry Smith. Tyresius Cross was the youth devotional leader and gave the welcome. The 45-minute Bible lesson was taken from I Corinthians 13.

The adult class was taught by Johnny Bankston while Francine Towns taught the youth class. During the business session, Secretary Robin Booker named the following college students to receive scholarships from the Sunday School Union: Jessika Rucker (Trinity Sunday School), Sharkeia Wright (Pleasant Grove), Destiny Favors (Mark’s Tabernacle), Alexius Gartrell (Gibson Grove), Nailah Jones (Pleasant Grove), Jasmine Cofer (Gibson Grove), Jamia Johnson (Pleasant Grove), and Bobby Heard (White Rock).

The doctrinal sermon was preached by Rev. Patrick Howell entitled, “The Other One” taken from I Samuel 16:11-12. The session was then dismissed for lunch and workshop. After reassembling, the youth session was led by Chairman Francine Towns. After the literary program, the inspirational address was delivered by Joshua Johnson entitled “God’s Love” with emphasis on the scripture taken from St. John 3:16. The Bible Bowl was led by Teresa Pitts and Dyann Jackson with participants from Gibson Grove, Pleasant Grove, and Springfield. After a special thanks to the food committee, Rachel Jackson and Catherine Thrasher, the benediction was led by Rev. Lance Pitts.

The Sunday morning session was opened by Booker and devotional services were led by Joe Harden and Jimmie Harris. The session was turned over to the Sunday School department where Larry Williams presided as superintendent. The lesson was entitled “Everyone Matters” taken from St. Matthew 25:31-46. Introduced by Larry Williams, the inspirational address was presented by Booker entitled “The Greatest Gift of All.”

The missionary sermon was delivered by Rev. Paul Hull entitled “Simon’s Wife’s Mother Lay Sick” taken from St. Mark 1:29-31. Singing was by the Springfield Baptist Church choir. The hospitality remarks were given by Betty Harris. Special thanks were given by Booker to all the delegates and Sunday Schools for their participation in this Union’s session. College students and their parents expressed their appreciation for the college scholarship money. The final financial report was read by Carolyn Harper. After a special prayer for the names on the sick list as well as for the list of deceased Sunday School workers, the benediction was led by Rev. Hull. The next Union session will convene March 29-31, 2019, at Mulberry Baptist Church.
